SORTAVALA

Sortavala is a small town in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, located at the north of the Lake Ladoga. In 1917 like a part of independent Finland the town was lost by Russia but after the Winter War Russia has put under control this area again. Like the rest of Finnish Karelia, Sortavala was retaken by Finland during 19411944. Then Russia has put back the town finally. Now all Sortavala's inhabitants seem to be dreamed that their town one day will find itself on Finnish area again.

These stars are not "soviet" ones because the building was raised in 1907. It was house of merchant Siitoisen, now it is the Sortavala Municipality building.

Over the one of building's entrances we can see a symbol that seems like the Banner of Peace that was created by Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. The Banner of Peace is a symbol of human unity, but we are not sure that house's creator had in view this symbol. Anyway we think that merchant Siitoisen was Freemason. The building is located on Ploschad Kirova (Torikatu), 11.

This strange ornament that reminds some Voodoo symbol is situated on the gratings of balconies and gate of other Sortavala's building. You can find this one at address: Ulitsa Kirova (Valamonkatu), 16. By the way, this is former Finland's Orthodox church administration.
